What is a pole of competitiveness ?

In a more and more competitive global economy, France launched in 2004 a new industrial policy which mobilises the key factors of competitiveness, in the first place of which is the capacity of innovation. This policy aims to arouse and then support initiatives stemming from the economic and academic stakeholders present in a territory.

Four principal elements are the keys to the success of the pole:

  • The implementation of a common strategy of economic development coherent with the overall strategy of the territory;
  • Close partnerships between the stakeholders around the projects;
  • Concentration on technologies destined for high potential growth markets;
  • A sufficient critical mass to acquire and develop an international visibility.

Through this networking of the stakeholders of innovation, the policy of poles has the end objective of the creation of new wealth and the development of employment in the territories.
